Balance for Better: Reducing Barriers and creating opportunities

Posted on 08 March 2019

Each year on the 8th of March people around the world mark International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The theme for 2019 is Balance for Better and calls for us all to “build a gender-balanced world”.

We reflected on what this means for us at Wallace Myers International, both as a business and as individual team members.

Balance in Business

At Wallace Myers International we work to a set of values that aim to build a culture that reduces barriers and creates opportunities. As a business, we believe that in achieving these aims a balance for better is created.

Research shows that just 13% of Irish board members are women. We fundamentally disagree with this imbalance. Gender should not be a barrier to becoming a board member or to any other type of career growth. In an effort to reduce the board room barrier for women at Wallace Myers we have a transparent growth path for all team members. The same opportunities are available to all members of our team and there is no limit to the promotions available.

Working so closely with companies and professionals in Ireland, we receive a lot of insight into the challenges faced by professional women. Since 2017 we have seen an increase in the demand, from professional women, for better flexibility. In response, more and more Irish businesses are opening up to the idea of flexible working.

We have also changed the way we work at Wallace Myers by introducing flexible working hours and remote working options. Like many businesses, our team includes women from all manner of backgrounds. Some have families, some are athletes, some are students. We all have something outside of work that requires our attention. Flexible working takes away a barrier and alleviates stress. Meaning that all of our employees have more control of their time and a better work-life balance.

We know that the steps we have taken to create a balanced workforce and culture at Wallace Myers are minute in the wider picture of gender parity. However, when it comes to balance for better and the welfare of our team we will always embrace change and new ideas.

Wishing you all a happy International Women’s Day!
